Dry coolers disperse the heat generated by an industrial process into the external environment, at minimal electrical consumption. They cover a wide range of power levels and can be supplied to exploit adiabatic cooling where ambient conditions permit, using cardboard or plastic evaporative panels to raise performance on the hottest days.
Special versions operate with pure water, without glycol, in maximum safety conditions — including through hard winters, where an unprotected circuit would be at risk of freezing.
The comparison that usually matters is against an evaporative cooling tower. Dry coolers are a valid and convenient alternative, reducing both operating costs and water consumption appreciably. For a plant in a water-scarce region, or one carrying the maintenance and water-treatment burden of an open tower, that difference compounds year after year.
Dry coolers also form one half of a free-cooling installation: paired with a chiller under a common control, they take over whenever ambient drops below the process temperature, letting the compressors stop.
